Camden is one of the most historic towns in South Carolina and serves as the county seat of Kershaw County. It’s about 30 miles northeast of Columbia and is widely recognized for its Revolutionary War history and equestrian culture.

History
Founded in the 1730s, Camden is the oldest inland city in South Carolina. It played a pivotal role during the Revolutionary War, with two major battles—Camden (1780) and Hobkirk’s Hill (1781)—taking place nearby. The city has preserved much of its historic character, with landmarks, museums, and restored sites. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, Camden grew into a nationally recognized center for horse racing and steeplechase events.

Camden is entirely in Kershaw County and functions as its cultural and administrative center.

Camden is served by Kershaw County School District. Local schools include Camden Elementary, Jackson School, Camden Middle, and Camden High School.
Commute
Camden sits along U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 521, with I-20 just south of the city. This makes Columbia about a 35–40 minute drive. Amtrak’s Silver Star line also stops in Camden, providing passenger rail connections.
