Harbison grew in the late 20th century as Columbia expanded northwest. Its name comes from Harbison Agricultural College, a historically significant African American college that once operated in the area. Development accelerated with the construction of Columbiana Mall and surrounding retail corridors.

Harbison is part of Lexington-Richland School District Five. Nearby schools include Harbison West Elementary, Irmo Middle, and Irmo High School.
