Irmo is a suburban town northwest of Columbia, located between the capital city and Lake Murray. It has grown rapidly from a small farming community into one of the Midlands’ largest suburban centers. Pronounced “ER-mo.”

Irmo is known for its established neighborhoods, suburban conveniences, and annual community events like the Okra Strut Festival. The town offers access to Lake Murray, shopping in nearby Harbison, and strong ties to its local schools.

History
Irmo was founded in 1890 when the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens Railroad was built through the area. Its name is said to be a combination of two railroad officials’ names: Iredell and Moseley. The community grew steadily in the late 20th century with Columbia’s suburban expansion.

County
Irmo spans both Lexington and Richland counties.

Schools
Irmo is served by Lexington-Richland School District Five. Local schools include Irmo Elementary, Irmo Middle, Irmo High, and Dutch Fork High.

Commute
Irmo is located along I-26, making downtown Columbia about a 15–20 minute drive. U.S. Highway 76 also connects Irmo with Ballentine and Chapin.
